I just got a new fish tank that's 400 gallons and I was wondering if there were some aggressive, big, and rare South American fish out there?

Thanks,

Danielle

You could consider Umbee or some of the larger Pike Cichlids. If this is your first attempt at keeping large and aggressive cichlids, make sure you research as much as you can before making your decision. They can be rewarding fish to keep but also a challenge at times. There is a good sticky on this page that will give you some other S. American Cichlids to consider too. With a 400 gallon tank, you have a lot to choose from. Breeding pairs, adult sizes, individual temperament, and number of fish will all make a difference in what will work together.

Do you mean South American only, or also Central American? Excluding cichla and crenicichla, there aren't a lot of big aggressive SA cichlids out there.

A big pair of Hoplarchus psittacus fit the bill nicely. There are others for sure but the true parrot is a must for that tank!

Tons in the cichla department...the best area for big, aggressive, colorful and full of personality. Check out cichla kelberi, orino, piquitti, monoculous, occelaris and melanie to name a few :)

A pair of Festae FTW!!!!!!!!!

Colour, Aggression and sheer greatness!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh I just felt a shiver at the thought of those in a tank that size :nilly:

I'm pretty sure when posting in the CA/SA section about are there any good south american fish its clear they have no knowledge of species etc, I think they mean all things south of the USA etc.

you can have many types of fish in that size tank, it really depends what you like best. lots of small fish, or a few big fish, what noncichlids you want in the tank and even if you want any non cichlids at all. breeding? show fish? wet pet(one single large fish)? your options are pretty broad in a 300g tank.

I know Chicago has a cichlid club that has a really good website, I also have another good link for you.

Select central american, and south american.

also here is another really useful link

This one groups them in species groups so you can see similarly related fish.

hope this helps you decide what you would like.
