Wondering if anyone can help to id a fish... unfortunately I don't have a pic!

I found them in the East Harling branch of Swallow Aquatics, I could call tomorrow, but I know i'll forget to!

There were several in the same tank, their fins were looking a bit tatty so I assume they're quite aggressive.

They were about 3 or 4 inches long, body shape was a cross between a Dat and a Leoprinus. They had black / orange longitudinal bands - similar in colour and size to a clown loach.

The scientific name was written on the tank, it began with a 'D' but i've forgotten everything else!

There was also another species of the same genus in the tank, this was a similar shape but was totally silver - metallic like a tinfoil barb.

Any suggestions? I want to find out ifit would suit my tank as the chap in the shop described them as 'territorial, but best kept in groups' which seemed a bit odd.

Thanks,

Certainly looks like it, just looked them up. Seem a bit unpredictable. I've got tinfoil barbs, an Acara, plec, indian flying barbs and a polyterus senegalus, any chance they'll all get on with a distochodus?

yeah if the Distichodus is at 3-4 inches then it should be fine with your stock, But as the D. Sexfaciatus grows bigger, it gets more territorial and also more aggressive.

Sounds like a D. sexfasciatus, the silver one of the same genus was probably a D. affinis. They can be kept in groups as juvies but become territorial as they age and would have to be kept on their own. They destroy most plants, and can get over 18'', so you'd need a big tank. They're interesting fish though.
