Well, I'm having a hard time in my guitar class, mainly being able to read notes quickly and finding them on the fret board. I takes me about 20-30 seconds to do this. Not to bad considering I've only done this for a couple weeks, but not fast enough for my class.

The thing is I need help finding a way to be able to recognize the note's letter instantly not taking ten seconds to find out what it's called and then playing it on the guitar, I want it to all go smoothly and not play a song with a 30-second delay in between each note.

Lol, sorry for the long post, just need some help. :)

Any tips to help me practice will be immensely appreciated.

It just takes time and practice. I'm not a guitarist, but I have played other instruments by reading music and it's been the same for me every time I've tried a new instrument. After a while you'll get used to it and you won't even have to think about where your fingers are going.

Thanks I'll be doing a good amount of practicing today :grinyes:

I see what your saying, I used to play piano years ago and could read music and play no problem. I've dabbled with the guitar with bad results and always used tab, I don't really see why people don't.

i have taken guitar lessons for about 9 months now and the first thing my guitar teacher thought me was what each of the frets on the neck were, he never taught me how to read music, But he did teach me what each of the frets were in actual notes (like E and A etc) . But recently i started taking guitar as a course in school (for an easy credit) And we learned to read music and i realised that becuase of the harmonic range of the guitar, sheet music is a highly inneffective system for guitar. When theres a bajillion ledger lines above/below the staff it just gets really irritating.

so can i read music Yes. Do i enjoy it Hell no.

Learn the notes on the neck and not only does everything start to make sense from a harmonic standpoint but you understand WHY it makes sense.

i like knowing that i can read music (becuase it would let me play a peice of music not originaly composed on the guitar) but if it's a guitar peice im trying to learn then i will always prefer tab.

i'd imagine that when i start to do more complicated time signatures and such i'll be happy that i learned to read music but until then.... Meh

Just remember from bottom to top for each of the lines on the staff. Every(E) Good (G) Boy(B) Deserves(D) Fudge(F)
and each of the spaces are FACE. When you go below the staff(like on the E and A strings) go back one tone for each space or line below the staff. The opposite when your above it for up one tone for each line/space.

i've been reading sheet music for over 30 years . yes i'm that old . anyways , if your problem is note recognition , you just gotta drill it . its memorization , but it gets quicker as you go . once you get that , there is the issue that on guitar the same note can be played in several different places on the neck . your getting more advanced if your in upper positions at that point . heres a blog about sight reading on guitar from my buddies website .... he's a jazz player who teaches at g.i.t. .. it may be a bit advanced for you or not but the concepts are good ...
