my tank has been cycling for a week just about and i was wondering if there are any hardy cichlids that can take the cycle?i was thinking about getting a pike but i dont want to spend 10$ then it die tonight.thanks.

What cichlid isn't hardy? J/K
Convicts are cheap, you can try those, but why not just wait until your tank is done cycling?

API feshwater liquid is the only one that has been consistently reliable for me. I am sure their are others, but it's about $30. It is however worth it in the long term. I would not recommend the strips. They are notoriously inaccurate. Good Luck.

Take it to Petsmart they do it for free

using strips at most of the petsmarts/petco ive seen. he can easily buy the strips for $5 and get his own inaccurate tests then ;)

could you reccomend a cheap test kit?

You really need a test kit, they are extremely important, especially if you run into problems with disease. A test kit won't be more than 40$ and the money is well worth it.

x2 - API is a great brand IMO and strips are terribly inaccurate.

i would buy a test kit before i wasted money on cycling fish... do a fishless cycle and spend the 20 bucks on the test kit.... id hate to see anyone not have a test kit but as was said u can take your water to a chain store and they will test as far as hardy cichlids to cycle water.... dont waste money on a cichlid cycler get danios
