looking to Breed jd's in my 65 hex. currently have 2 males. a 4'' and a 1.5'' Electric blue. very best color. want to try and find a couple ladies for them. any suggestions on size and quantity to try and find mates would be appreciated. was thinking of doing the bottom of the tank totally slate with lots of caves. would that be a good idea?

ok lets refresh this. not sure what to do with the 65 hex yet. but i do need to get my dempseys out of my 120 gallon and away from my datnoids so sounds like a good idea. maybe i should try to get a female regular dempsey and try to mate the EBJD and try for EBJDs. good money for those babies. any input would be nice. never tried to mate dempsey's had oscars and jags before on accident.

I have bred Jack Dempsey's in a thirty gallon tank. I bought them as a pair and within a week they laid eggs on a very small pile of rocks. The bottom was just normal gravel and I had a few pieces of driftwood. Most of the tank was just piles of small rocks. They laid the eggs on a round rock just smaller than a fist. I think they are easy to breed, but the hard part is getting the fish to pair off. Maybe try four females around the same size and see if they pair off with the two males. I didn't do anythhing special to the water, it just happened. I am trying to breed them again and I will let you know if I have any success. Good Luck!

Oh... make sure you have some hiding places or dither fish to make them feel safe. Mine seem to be VERY skittish.

I had no problem at all getting mine to breed.
I had about 5 males and brought a female home..[didnt know she was a she]
she immediatly paired with my oldest male right away.
Have flat rocks or flower pots for them to lay eggs on.
If not they will just dig anyway.
I really didnt have to do anything special to get them to breed.
Hope that was some sort of help if any at all hehh.

65 hex not a great shape for breeding cichlids, not alot of floor space.Id get a few females a little smaller than each of your males and let them pick.Use 55g or 40 breeder tanks
