My wife just called me at work and said my sump pump (Mag Drive 2400) is turning on and off all by itself. She said it has done it a couple of times this morning.

No being at home I have no clue as to what is causing this. She said the lights on the tank are not going out but they are on another circuit.

So to be a step ahead of the game in case the sucker is going bad I have been searching for a replacement.

I have come across another Danner line of pumps called Hy-Drive. It appears that the Hy-Drive 2100 has near the same head curve as the Mag Drive 2400 with even more flow at the higher end of the curve. It also uses much less electricity.

Anybody here use these pumps and have anything good or bad to say about them?

I use a very large one in an outdoor setup. So far, I've had good results (used it for about a year). That said, I really don't trust the brand very much though. My experience with Mag pumps is they don't make it more than a couple of years. At the least, they start having problems coming back on after power outages, etc. I've used lots and lots of Mags over the years, and I consider them an "acceptable" option considering they aren't very expensive.

All that said, if I was going to run an indoor tank with just one pump there's no way I'd consider using a Mag. I'd think about it if I used two pumps (And have actually done that in the past), but I just can't depend on them like I can Eheim or Reeflo.

I assume you are looking to run your 300 with the new pump you're considering, so you need a good amount of power. Look at the Reeflo Dart or one of the larger models. More money, but definitely a better (i.e. dependable) workhorse.

It is running in the 200 gallon sump and needs to be submersible.

I do have a Reeflo Barracuda that will soon be in operation for my Ocean Clears and UV. I can't wait to hear that baby purr. :)

Well the pump was running fine last night. I don't know what was going on. I still think I need to get a back up ordered just to be safe.

Any other suggestions for high performance submersible pumps.

And don't say "Quiet One". You couldn't pay me to use one of those pumps.

The best submersible pump is the red dragon they're ultra effecient and durable but they are unbelievebly pricy, the second best submersibles are the eheims but they don't have very large gph. I'd reccomend drilling your sump and installing a more durable external pump like a iwaki, reeflo, etc.

No drilling this sump. It's a home built pond liner sump. The walls are made of 2x4's with r-13 insulation then 3/4" plywood and 3/4" foam.

Wow, those Red Dragons look nice but you are right, very pricey.
