Any idea what this thing is?

I see these fish are being sold in NYC for food but i have no idea what they are they look very interesting. They appear to be a freshwater fish because they are sometimes kept in tanks with Largemouth bass. Does anyone know? They're about a foot long never seen any bigger than that. I'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post i have no idea where it should be posted.
