This grew from a bulb, one of those things that you can buy in most pet stores.

It's a tropical Nymphaea. N. lotus is the most common species in the trade, but I don't know how to tell it apart from some of the other species offered.

I have a few of them. I have the dwarf variety (red). I usually cut those pads that come to the surface to prevent them from blocking light to my other plants. One of my plants decided to send out another to the surface and I am leaving it to see if it will flower.

Thanks so much! Next question - will cuttings root and form a new bulb or what? I can't find clear information on the net. I want to give some to a friend.

No cuttings will not form a new plant. There is 2 ways this plant reproduces. By seed and by bulb. The plant has to flower in order to get the seeds, and even then I think it is a tricky process getting seeds/plants this way etc. And getting bulbs I have no idea. My plants started off a bulb and then I got rid of the bulb. I have no idea how a new bulb is made.

This is not be entirely true. You can grow new plants from cuttings of a bulb plants.

If you notice this bulb has a runner coming off of it. If you cut this runner (daughter plant) and replant it you will have a new plant. Also you can cut floating lily pads and let it float around the tank it will grow roots and you can plant that to start a new plant.

Hmm...any idea if the floating pad version works on sensitive lilies like tiger lotus? If so the next time I trim they arent going into the garbage can haha.
