My friend found a small tank in their attic that they are giving to me. They didn't give me dimensions yet and I haven't seen it but he said its glass, it's very small (2-5 gallons) and it's a countertop. I know there isn't really crap I can put in a tank that small but is there anything?

here are some options I was considering.

1) single swampfish (Chologaster cornuta) and PACK it with java moss since they can't have filters.
2) breed ghost shrimp as feeders for my fish, not sure if that's big enough to breed or not...
3) single betta, I've heard min tank as everything from less than two to 5+.
Any other options? I'll give dimensions and show pictures when I get it.

You can probably just plant it bettas need a heater and a filter and a tank bigger than 5 gallons and if you don't have a filter then you cant really put anything in it. You could get one of those really small canister filters then you could breed shrimp in it

What about the swamp fish? They're really hardy and somebody on nanfa said they successfully kept one for Years in a JUG with I filter that was packed with java moss to act as a filter.

If it is only around 2 gallons a betta would be a good choice.

Ok, ill keep that option in mind. If I did plants with a betta and did twice weekly 50%s would I need a filter. I could even change all the water weekly since bacteria grows on surface not in the water column.

Now I see a betta tank size argument coming on.

You can use a sponge filter with the swampfish or the fighting fish. Just make sure you don't put a super-duper air pump on it, cause that would be bad for little swampy
