Hey,
Ever since I decided to give up keeping stingrays for a little while I have been able to focus on keeping big rare predator fish. My plans are to build a pretty big tank in the near future, maybe a 12' x 4' x 4' maybe 15' x 5' x 4' and then play around with stocking it with a series of big predators. So far I know a few fish that will be going in it for sure, and then I have a few others I might try in there. I wouldn't mind getting some suggestions of a few more big, rare, predatory fish to try in this community.
So far I have a nice group of cichla to stock it with (pinima, piquiti, orinos, occies and tems... I might take the orinos and occies and put them in a smaller tank since the other cichla will be quite a bit larger than them). I also have some dats growing up, some big bichirs (endlis, congis, laps and ansorgiis... 16 inches + either on hand or on the way).
Those are the fish I know for sure. I also have an aussie lung growing up that I might try in there, and a blue base cross back arowana on the way, that I might try in there when it's big enough. I would love to try some big hoplias (maybe lacerdae), possibly some rarer lates, like japonicus, or maybe some big cuban gars.
I know it sounds like big dreams, but I am going to be fairly flexible with the stocking. If some of the more aggressive fish get too out of hand they can be housed alone in another tank, or if some of the more laid back fish aren't working out with the majority I can always set up another tank for them. I just want to get all the fish up to reasonable sizes in smaller tanks and then start by introducing the bass, dats and the bichirs, then the arowana and the AUL. From there who knows.
Any suggestions for some cool rare fish that may work out in this mix or maybe just some suggestions on the best way of trying out such a mix?
Thanks in advance,
Justin Morash
