Hey guys and gals....

I have a young albino snapping turtle. He has an approximately 4" shell diameter...so he is still very young and not aggressive at all yet. The problem is that he is an extremely messy eater and despite having his tank WAY overfiltered, it still gets pretty messy on the bottom. I was wondering if there is an invert that would be good for clean up detail that is non-aggressive and would not bother my turtle. I also understand that whatever invert I get will eventually be turtle food...which is fine...I just don't want to spend a lot of cash on them. I don't really monitor nitrates/nitrites/ammonia since turtles aren't as sensitive as fish, but I do have plenty of bio-filtration as well as an Anubia plant in the tank. I also do a 75% water change approximately every 10 days.

Tank parameters: 75 gallon tank (1/3 full)
7.0 pH
Pool filter sand substrate
70 degrees F

Here are some pics of the little guy...just in case you are curious. His name is Beavis.

I guess any dwarf shrimp species would be okay... But dont think they're cheap to buy over in the US, so might be very expensive feeders...

A crayfish or two might be safe for the time being.

But crays are capable of possibly hurting the turtle no?

Thanks for the compliments guys. He is definitely an awesome pet....lots of personality. I would be too worried putting crayfish in with him. When I had my cichlid tank running I had a couple crays in there and one of them had a pretty nasty claw and took pinches at my fish whenever they got close.

I've been leaning toward some red cherry shrimp. They are relatively inexpensive, seem to be relatively hardy, and are pretty neat looking too. I found some on Aquabid for a good price with free shipping.

Red cherries are probably your best bet... If possible throw in some java moss if you get pregnant females so the babies have somewhere to hide...

Btw, do you have any plants / driftwood in the tank? Coz shrimps do seem to enjoy climbing around etc...

I currently have a piece of driftwood with an Anubias Nana rooted in it. I plan on getting some java moss as well so they have more cover...and hopefully they don't get eaten too fast by the snapper.

Thanks for the advice...much appreciated.

careful that might be a alligator snapping turtle. You can get in huge trouble for having it. I'm not a expert on ID's by no means
