Took my kid to the lfs other day he decided he wanted a cuban cichlid. They need anything speacial for care? I only got it because its the first time he ever asked for a fish. HEs 16. hoping he might start liking the hobby now.

I have a breeding pair. This pic makes my male look smaller than he actually is:

They tend to be very aggressive with each other unless you have a strong pair. Also like any Nandopsis they can bloat if you slack on water changes and overfeed. Males are by far better looking. Don't know what else you want to know! :)

thought bloat was from not having proper nutrition?
How big is your male?

As mentioned they are nasty fish. My pair left alone in a 125 will not tolerate any tankmates. The only fish that get along with them are my larger pair of citrinellus and silver dollars too fast for them to catch. IME they do better at warmer temperatures like hatiensis. Somehwere between 84-86F. Except for one incident, my pair get along very well and have the strongest bond out of any cichlid I have kept. Also, conscpecific aggression is very high. I started with 5 in a 125 and they basically killed eachother down to a pair.

Here is an old pic of mine. They are still very small.

Bloat is a symptom, not a disease. There are a number of causes.

He's around 9".

He's also the father of rrcoolj's fish pictured above. :)

Forgot to mention that lol. Forgot to mention also they have great personality. My male cuban is the first too greet me in the morning even before my citrinellus.

On a side not, aclockworkorange it is weird you picked that quote for your sig. I actually read that book over the summer for school. Great book, I liked it a lot.

The bloat issue usually occurs when they are under stress. Cold temps, too few water changes, or overcrowding.
Mine were fine with dissimilar shaped cichlids until they spawned.

They can be quite prolific, although the young have a tendency to intra-sibling aggression, and whittle their brothers and sisters to a manageable amount fairly quickly
