what size tank would you guys recommend to keep one in? Would one get along with a tire track eel and some african cichlids? Are hugetas aggressive? I saw a few at the LFS, they were silver with a black dot on the tail? what species is this?

thanks

They get about 9in so a 55gl or bigger would be good in my opinion. They are a peaceful to anthing that can't fit in it's mouth so it should be fine with the fire eel.

Thanks

do you think that they would get along with mbuna? Or would a hujeta be able to eat smaller cichlids when they get bigger? like 3" electric yellows....?

I think the mbuna would probably pick on them depending on what you have. Knowing the personality of most yeallow labs, I think they would be fine with them, but most other mbunas would mess them up.

I have never really seen one that is full grow, maybe about 6in at the most, but I don't think even a full grown one could handle a 3in cichlid, but there is always a chance.

ok cool

do they like to hang out in groups? how many should i get to make them feel more comfortable? do they only eat live food? or is it possible to get them trained on frozen fish, krill, or pellet foods?

Mine ate anything, including floating hikari pellets. They are fragile and they are not fighters. They would get bullied by cichlids. And my albino snakehead when it was 4 inches bit a 5 inch hujeta in half.

I have had them in the past they need swimming space if you are going to have a shoal I would say a 90. I got my one feeding on white bate and lance fish sliced up if it was thrown into the jet from the filter they would attack it right away. Look up Ctenolucius Hujeta that should be the one. They jump and a well covered aquarium is a must. You should also get at least 3. And they can get quite large I had one left he was12” I gave it to a friend and he also ended up as snakehead food seams like snakeheads like them a lot.

Tank mates need to be large enough not to be eaten but unaggressive, so Puffers,SH, Etc. not a good idea.

The only tankmate my Hujeta did not get along with was a Marbled Gar (Boulengerella Maculata), another pike characin from South America and both are top-water species. They duked it out constantly, both were shredded. Everything else seemed to be fine.

Hujetas like small groups and usually get along with most fish that are to big to eat. they are predatory but not sggressive, they like clumps of cover plants interspersed with open areas. Unlike some of the less common cachorros they adapt to pellets but really like the occasional live food, they love crickets and grasshoppers. They do get picked on by sunfish, and aggressive cichlids. I have never kept them with a B. maculata but I have had them kill small needlefish, and have had them eaten by pike topminnows of similar size. I have seen several kept in a tank with a redfin pickerel with no problems.
