I am about to acquire this sump as part of a 240 tank...not sure what kind it is...and searches havent turned up much. Has anyone seen this design? Any good? Also....the Rainbow lifeguard units are coming with the tank...never used those either...are they any good?

I was also thinking that all that mechanical filter mesh in the rolls should be replaced by bioballs... the very top has a drip tray and a filter pad on it...to me it looks a little overkill on the mechanical...dont you think?

Yes! I would do bio balls! Water will find a path to stream through the mesh filters, bio balls will break the water up into drops. You will have a much larger water/air surface are with bio balls for better O2 exchange and off gassing.

With Bio Balls I think it will be an excellent wet dry and would not hesitate to use it myself!

I would replace with bioballs and throw some matrix on the bottom because it needs to be submerged. make driptray with filter fiber on top. Then put some fine micron filter cartrages in the available lifguard modules.

So would it be a good idea to run the lifeguard system inline with the return from the sump or set it as its own standalone system?

The nice thing about the lifegard is you can kinda do whatever with em. You will either want to plumb it inline but intake the 2 separate sides so you can shut one side down and your sump won't need to stop. Or just run em separate with like a quiet one 1000gph pump.
