I have kept a number of different SA/CA cichlids in the past but never a dovii or managuensis (which I've always wanted). I'm gearing up to order my jag and I thought I'd ask if anyone had any big tips they wished they'd gotten before handling them. I know the water conditions, and he'll be going into an 80 gallon tank where he will have full reign. Any tips are much appreciated!

I don't know jags well but isn't 80 gallons a little small for the species? other than that I have no tips lol.

Mean mf breeding factory's not to hard to care for eat pretty much anything it's harder finding tankmates and that 90 gallon isn't going to last very long but it's not a bad start beautiful fish I wish they weren't so common in my area so i could keep a pair and actually not have to give away the fry but down here there everywhere

ya don't get my comment twisted I wasn't being the typical rude "your tanks small, feel bad and quit fish keeping", but I know at least my one LFS has a breeding pair of jags in what I would guess is a 125 and the male himself makes the tank look tiny for sure. But as stated that's not a bad start for a juvenile by any means!

This one belongs to a friend of mine 14"+ long.
He's a stunning and very aggressive fish. He will start out ok in your 90 but you will need a 125 for an adult male. Look at the video, he gives a few tips on how he grew his out.

Good luck with him if you get one they're a great fish to own.

Jags are easy. Keep your water clean, keep the temp around 78-82F, and feed a quality pellet. A male will require a bare minimum 125 around 1.5-2yrs of age. Growth rate around .75-1" per month until around 8-10" then really curbs after that. Most top out at 14" max from what ive seen, but if you get one of the true 16" males be prepared for a 180g.

Not really a tip, but just something I should mention. Most people will say they're hyper aggressive or social wet pet pets. What I have noticed over the yrs is that most are not glass bangers and not that social. I would describe mine as cautious and inquisitive. Now they do go on rampages here/there, but nothing remotely close to a dovii. None of my males have been amphilophus type interactive either. Now breeding is like any other cichlid they're jump out the water aggressive with fry. Just my experiences.

Awesome video! That fish is gorgeous. I already do 20% water changes about every other day and my water stays around 80* with a ph of 7.6 so I think he should flourish in my set up.

That was actually sort of what I was hoping for PYRU. I do crack up watching videos of dovii going after their owners, but I don't really want a fish that actively hates my presence in the room. When I was trying to decide between the two breeds, it came down to the fact that I think jags may be the prettiest cichlid there is. I love the black and white patterning. I assumed that I'd need a 125 once he gets full grown because my tank is only 13" deep and I'm not looking to give spinal problems to my cichlid. That growth rate is absurd though! I had assumed it'd be 2-3 years to go from a 4" fish to an 8".

Thanks for all the responses guys! You don't think a 4" jag would go after a 5" pleco would he? I have another tank I could move him into if need be, but I'd rather let him be in the 80 gallon. 80* means my fish are a little more active and are growing quicker, but the algae build up on my driftwood and select spots on the tank is absurd.

he might harass the pleco, but at that size he'll regret it.
