I am trying to land a job as a Jr. Network Engineer..

Was wondering if anyone else out there on MFK has a job like this?

What do you do?

What should I be trying to learn?

PM me so we can chat ;)

I am a network engineer.. Higher level though.

General networking skills are a great starting place.

Look into getting TCP/IP, Routing, OSPF, VLANs, and Cisco experience.

If you can, buy a cheap Cisco 2500 (Used) router on ebay and set it up using the console commands. Upgrade the flash (Even if it doesn't need it) it's good to go through the motions.

Anything else I can think of I will add later.

i'm currently working my way up that ladder...right now in tier 2 help desk but going to be applying for 2 admin positions coming up soon.. I have mcsa certification and can take exams for mcse. i've taken course material for mcse and passed already but just need to get on the ball to do it.

my goal was to be in an admin postion within a year but I think I'm gonna be ahead of schedule. i've only been here 4 months and the guy who was tech lead when i started is an admin now and was the one who told me about the upcoming admin positions and he strongly urged me to apply for them....so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. that'd be awesome to get an admin spot so quickly. :)

think I'm gonna take VLDesign's suggestion and look for a cheap cisco router to mess wtih at home. I have licensed versions of MS Server 2003 that I can mess around with at home to keep things fresh in my mind and just to play around with.
