I would keep it singly if necessary
I would want a good sized one, at least 7 inches

if you want an active puffer a green spotted would be good for you, they get around 6 inches, if you could care less about activity, then a arrowhead puffer would do good, both are voracious eaters, green spotted can be kept together i believe, while arrowheads cannot. i think arrowheads get around 7 inches long. i cant think of any puffer or 8 inches that can be put in a 55.

*i cant think of any that can get over 8 inches that can be put into a 55 gallon

I'm thinking of turning it into a brackish tank with some gsp and monos
and maybe a dragon goby

NO other fish, a GSP will most likely kill those fish, best to keep them by themselves, it may work, a few people were able to mix gsp with a archer fish, but its by chance most likely.

oh that sux then
there aren't any other kinds?

monos and puffers work- however monos (argentius, and especially sebae) grow pretty large and would eventully probably need a larger tank.
