I finally got around to cleaning up my 3.5 gallon with just an anubias in it with a betta in mind. I’d love a dwarf puffer but I’d assume they would require high amounts of water changes to keep nitrates down in such a small tank.
It did get me thinking of what other oddballs are a possibility for a small tank.

Betta, shrimps, mexican dwarf crayfish, maybe a badis. Not many options that I can think of, but there are more just not as common in stores.

Thanks! Didn’t know a badis could fit.
I looked at microctenopoma but it looks like the need bigger tanks.

Cherry shrimp are on my radar too. I’m hoping I can get them and reestablish a pond snail population. I can also use the snails to feed my loaches when there are too many.

Tank doesn’t have a heater. I could definitely do otos if I did but I’m pretty sure they need low 80s. Puffer is tempting...

I don’t really know, just know badis badis are quite small, but don’t know it’ll work in a 3.5 gallon for sure.

I may upgrade to a 5, that would definitely open up more of the common options.
I may just go with a betta or badis plus shrimp. Maybe a cray if I find one.
