I'm doing some preliminary research. In a few months, I'm going to have at least 2 55g tanks open.

A few species have really grabbed my attention. I'm hoping to land a breeding pair and spawn them.

Are any of the following species good to breed in a 55g tank?

Their size made me think it would be a safe bet, but as we know, personal experience and knowledge of the disposition of specific species is better than judging by size only.

Cichlasoma Beani
Cichlasoma Uropthalmus
Amphilophus Festae
Amphilophus Robertsoni
Hypsophrys Nicaraguensis
Nandopsis Tetracanthus
Neetroplus Nematopus

I've not kept all of these, however The Festae pair would be a no... full grown a male can reach 15-16". I'm sure some one else on here has more exp breeding than I do as I for the most part keep single fish. Beani is very aggr and would prob be a no as well... as for the rest I'm not too sure. Cubans might be pretty tough, though they don't get quite as big as a Festae or even a Beani.

Top 4 in your list, No. They all get too big for a 55.

The bottom 3 would be the best bet, in the order Ive put them..with the tetracanthus being a "maybe".

Itd be perfect for neets..and you could do 1 male 2 females and throw in some small dithers.

Neetroplus Nematopus
Hypsophrys Nicaraguensis
Nandopsis Tetracanthus

IMO neets are the only one from the list that would be ok in a 55. The rest will all get too big.

Really? Ive never seen Nics larger than about 8" or cubans 10"...which is why I said maybe for the cubans...

Are there people on here with bigger Nics or Cubans than that?

personally I wouldn't keep anything that will grow larger than 6-8" in a 55. I've never kept nics before but have read they can grow up to 10". Cubans can at least get 10" if not upwards of 12". So that's just my opinion, but of the ones the OP listed I would go with the neets. If nics do stay 8" or less then that might be a second option.

I agree...and add robertsoni to the list. They're peaceful and s-l-o-w growing...

If he's only going to keep 1 then yes, robertsoni would be ok. If he's wanting to keep a pair then I personally wouldn't try in that size tank. Robertsoni are notoriously intolerant of their own species except in very large tanks.

Maybe you're keeping different robertsoni than I did but mine were pretty darn mild as a group of 6 growing out to 3-4" in a 2'x2'x1' tank (then moved to a 4' tank.

I think a 55 is a little small for all but the Neets. I'm not saying you couldn't do it I just think they would look cramped in there.
