Just got 5 bundles for my filtration...any good?? very costly IMO...thanks Nic for steering me the right way bro...

Siporax®

A high-performance, fine-pore biofilter media with unbelievably high surface area (82,000 ft2/ft3) and the ability to perform both nitrification and denitrification under certain conditions. Siporax® works best with well-filtered, clear water (otherwise heterotrophic bacteria will cover the surface). Conveniently packaged in one-liter mesh bags. Made in Germany.

On topic though: it looks like regular ceramic media, and I assume it would work fine. All the jargon is pretty meaningless though. I have biomax, which is fluvals version, in my filters.

It seems way too expensive to me, but thats an insane amount of surface area if its true.

Hmmm interesting. Will you be using it submerged or just like bioballs, letting water trickle through it? Think I might get some.:D

looks like a sintered glass media to me, you can get it under a variety of names. Denitrification? yes, in the right conditions... but those conditions would only benefit your fish if the by products had no way to get back to the fish. If there's just a bundle sitting in the filter, then it's bad.

The way you are planning on setting it up will work wonderfully, just don't expect 0ppm nitrate readings.

Howdy,

Yes, I have been using it for the past 8-9 years. Not my preferred choice, though:

  • considerably less surface area than Eheim substrat pro (excuse me for going metric - you can do the math if you prefer ft^2/ft^3)
    Siporax 270 m^2/liter
    Ehfi Substrat Pro 450 m^2/liter
  • I don't like the large rings, they don't trap particles.
Thus, I now use Siporax in the bottom third of my canisters mixed with Ehfi Mech. I rely on Ehfi Substrat Pro for bio. It furthermore traps what the mech filter didn't catch, thus, I have fewer particles pass thru my filter. But Ehfi Substrat pro still doesn't clog up, thus, my cleaning intervals are still 6-12 months.

And no, Siporax does not degrade nitrates in a regular filter. You'd have to fill a low-flow denitrator with Siporax (or any other biomedia for that matter).

Sera is a great brand, and I love their products. But there's simply better stuff out there than Siporax.

THANKS FOR THE HEADS UP ON THE CAPS LOCK..

ANYWAYS BACK ON TOPIC..

it is glass and i dont care about the nitrates only getting some bacteria established on it...

i once used siporax, i was looking into recently and the real stuff is apparently made by sera, the stuff i had and you are talking about from germany is by schott and its a cheap copy (so i read). i have no idea how it compares to the sera stuff.
