Any one ever have their sunfish randomly rip up their plants

I'm just curious as I have a red breasted sun fish who has been in the tank for about a year. He never did anything to the plants, but when I went to feed him this morning 80% of the Java ferns were ripped up and in the back corner. I just planted them back in the substrate no big deal. But it was kind of odd.

He apparently has grown a dislike for the plants now. He ripped up the my Ludwigia yesterday.

That's what I though this morning, maybe trying to build a nest. As it has been less than a year, I have had him, so I was unable to observe this time last year.

No, no breeding, and upon checking again today he definitely made a nest.

I watch him work on his nest today it was pretty neat. He would go down to the bottom and do a sort of full body shimmy. Very interesting to see.
