I was think of trying it on a 55 with aqua clear 50 power heads with reverse flow on undergravel. So i gess an soild waste would be suspended in the water then get sucked into what ever filter i have hob an proly fluval 405. Any one use do they work good? Any thoughts on tjis type of filter type?

i thought about having one before, saw a thread or two on it. another member chimed in as to its downsides.

side note, from your post i see you said you'll probably have/get a fluval 405... i've heard mixed review and i would suggest a Eheim 2217, rated for 159g, dead quiet, and from all the review on here Eheims seem to last forever... i just picked one up and its great... about $50 cheaper than the 405, and it comes with media and filter pads.

Yeah, Eheim's are absolutely the way to go canister wise. They're unique (or just about) in the fact that they pump water from the bottom of the canister to the top, the opposite of how most canisters operate.

Means almost zero bypass, and the GPH is calculated as to provide the best biological filtration possible.

Can't speak highly enough of Eheim

I love the eheim 2217 but if you can get a fx5 do that you won't regret it =p though the 2217 looks a little nicer, i personally don't like undergravel filters, they pollute the water imo better to just do weekly cleanings if you have gravel and have a nice canister or sump

I use a reverse flow kit with undergravel plates on my 80 gal but dont have it stocked with your usual cichlids and gravel digging/moving fish. I also have medium to large sized gravel mixed in there. In my experience it seems to work great. My water on that tank is crystal clear and it seems that all the bio bacteria has found a great home in the gravel with this system. Out of all my tanks that tank is the one that needs the least water changes and is also one of the cleanest. Before the reverse flow kit I just had the undergravel system standard with air pumps and to tell you the truth it was a disgusting mess under there - now it stays pretty clean but dont expect to not have any waste buildup in your gravel bed (just alot less). To tell you the truth though it isn't really needed as out of all my tanks that is the only one that has a undergravel filter plate/system in it. If your going to use an undergravel system though I would highly reccomend the reverse flow powerheads for your UGF system.

i set up r u g in a 55 to try it but i used aquclear 50 power heads with them in reverse an they were not strong enough to push water up threw the gravel i think the pump has to be perty strongg
