well i have been keeping gar, large mouth bass, northern pike, walleye, and gamefish like that for a while now and have only encountered parasites due to feeding them live fish (goldfish, fatheads, etc.) only maybe 3 times. so anyway one of my spotted gar who is now about 12 inches long has a parasite due to some fatheads i fed him about a week or so ago. so I am now trying to feed him other things that aren't live fish because i want to rid him of his parasite. I have tried worms, blood worm cubes, krill, and fillets of perch he doesn't except none of them. what else should i try crickets? silversides?

what about small prawns you can get from the super market thats all ready peeled. if it dosnt work dont feed them any thing for couple of days. i did that to my clown knife fish got them on tropical flakes

oh, i didnt think of that when i had my motoro ray i used to feed him prawns well looks like ill be heading to store tomorrow. Thanks very much for the help.

try silversides, my gars love it. try holding it in the water and moe it around. the gar might just snap at it. if not drop it in front of your gar.

and maknobi86, dont want to sound like a flamer, but clown knife on flakes might not be a good idea. how big is your clown?

good news, the siversides did the trick he absolutely loves em. thanks alot man

u got a parasite? how can u tell?

if u actually got a parasite from a feeder, u got the worst feeders in the history

you can notice parasites on the fish from these white looking soars almost like ick but different shaped, the parasite causes some infection that creates these soars. i found this out from an encyclopedia i have on tropical fish.

gars are pretty resistant to parasites. like Lep said, those are some bad feeders hehe. i would quarantine them for 2 weeks with a little salt and parasite guard and gut load them before feeding them to your fish.

my arowana wasnt eating but then i bought some crickets from a local pet shop and fed them carrots over night and fed one to my arowana and he loved it. Mabye it will work for you gar too. The reason i feed them carrots is because i heard that it gives them nutrients.

i have a florida gar and he will eat anything i give him i normall feed him freeze dried shrimp but i have also fed him frozen shrimp from the grocrey store i just thawed it out first
