I just recently got my hands on a small gar of around... 3-4 inches? Through sheer luck, I was able to get it to eat some Hikari Cichlid Gold pellets(mini) that I had tossed in for my Jack Dempsey. It's been eating them for a few days and now that I know it takes pellets easily are there any specific pellets out there that I should feed it? Or is Cichlid gold something that can last?
Any particular pellet I should be feeding to this new gar I bought?

stick with what it can eat for now...if you can get it to take New Life Spectrum (which is often a challenge with gars), switch to that (go with a floating pellet from NLS) as that food is healthier. either way, you should be in good shape with the pellets - nice job getting it to switch so early on!--

I would love to take credit, but sadly it was all the Gar. It just decided to eat the pellet right after I put it in the tank. This leads me to believe that the fish store must have starved it pretty badly.
I use Cichlid gold as well as NLS and a couple other commercial feeds... If it is taking the Hakari good just go with it and then start mixing things up as the fish grows. I find Cichlid gold to be a lacking feed item for gar as it is formulated a bit off for the fish but it will work when combined with other items. For now though if your fish is taking it just keep up with that. I do suggest regular daily feedings though with the Cichlid gold.. Let the fish stuff it's self on it on each feeding.
