Anybody know of any plants / way to hold them down that can withstand being in a tank with cichlids?

The plastic type always works best. Just my opinion.

They've managed to even rip leaves off those too! Lol

Java fern can be attempted, in pots.

Agree
And silk plants? Maybe.

I have silk plants and java ferns and some straight grass that's thick. And these seem to do good so far. I also have amazon swords but they get chew at sometimes.
I think if you keep them fed and also add a little veggie to their diet it lessens the chance of them nipping at the plants.

Any plant which seems to have a waxy feeling to the leaves should work well. I've found anubias to be the best if you are going el natural.
