I could make tons of hiding places....
Oscar is currently 5"-6", I'm planning his next tank, hopefully be moving in a month - he is currently in a 75 gallon.

I considered on of the "blue lobsters" that get 12" long, but I'm worried that it will nibble my fish at night! (I think it's a cherax destructor, I may be wrong..)
Will the oscar be safe? how about full grown Rosy Barbs(6"-8") or an 8" common pleco?

Maybe some marbled crays with tons of hiding spots, or would they be instant food no matter the caves?

I'm planning 1" sand with MTS digging around, I'd like to do clams but my water is pristine - I'm not sure they would get enough even with adding invert food. (Although if the consensus is yes I'll try!)

Basically I want to liven up the tank some, trying to add something besides "a big fish"

I know this is kinda unlikely, but thanks for reading!

There really is no good cover where oscars are concerned. They spend all day figuring out how to move every bit of the tank. Any inverts will become tasty snacks in quick order, or harassed to death, in an oscar tank.

yeah ive had charax destructor with an oscar and it ended looking like kimbo got in there and beat the crap outta both of em. I'd be more worried about the yabbie munching your oscar of a nighttime.

Have a separate tank with cherry shrimp, asolene spixi or applesnails and marble crays.Keep dumping them in,He'll eat them all but they should breed fast enough in the other tank that youll always have some in his tank. You can root for ones that make it more than a week lol

there is not an invertebrate that I would recommend. I have tried several over the years, the only ones that survived were pest snails (not sure why my oscar would eat my expensive snails but leave the ramshorns but he does).

Alright thanks for the input! I'll wait till I set up my next to do some inverts - that ought to be a lot easier in a river tank than a oscar tank :)

Now I don't have second guess "what if I had gotten *this* one when he was smaller...."

Thanks!

Obviously your oscar has a taste for the finer things in life, and leaves the junk food for other fish :nilly:

perhaps a crawfish can work if you have alot of decorations/ caves and tunnels networking. buy a cheap "feeder" one. i had a crawfish in with flowerhorns which are nastier fish and it was fine...but it was messing up my plants so i removed it. oscars can eat a cray if they can catch it. if you add it, add it at night and put it in the caves. dont just toss it in the tank and let it float down. also, feed the oscars before adding it. crays are especially vunerable when molting.

im not saying this is going to definitely work but if given a better chance, it can.

i tried crayfish (larger marbled though still a small cray) in with my oscar and it took him less than 20 minutes to kill it.
