I was thinking about setting up a 180g tank, and im trying to setup a stock list when i get it.

I was thinking about doing SA/CA cichlids but im not sure on this. The next thing that came to mind were rays, always have been a dream fish for me, but never have had the space but with this space i was thinking of maybe getting a couple rays.

Is there any rays that could work in a 180g, other than the smaller ones like retics and teacups something a bit bigger?

And also what tankmates could i have to occupy the middle to top of the tank?

Any help would be much apprecaited.

I honestly wouldnt suggest rays for a 180.. I think they need a 240 minimum. You more into fw or sw?

is your 180gal a 6'x2'x2'? if so...a Retic. would be good for a while.

Well considering he is thinking of setting up a 180, I doubt he will upgrade soon.. Rays can be difficult to keep if your not experienced, I would suggest something easier.

Rays need more surface area to live in.. I mean if it was a 180 flat square tank then I would say go for 1... But most 180g's are like 16-22'' wide.. They should have more than 24'' width.

what kind of cichlids??? most cichlids are not good with rays....
a 180 will hold no ray for life but will last you several years and is perfect starter tank for rays.... tea cup is general term for small rays and 9 out of 10x its a retic..

why is a 8x2x2 tank better than a 6x2x2??? ray still needs the upgrade..water quality is the issue.. i know people growing rays out in 75 gallons.. now to be technical a 300 gallon of 30" width would be better but this as well will need potential upgrade in time..

my 180 was 24" wide and so was my friends.... but these dimensions will work for growing out rays...

A 180 will last any retic a LONG LONG time. I think Ive only seen one person with retics that would be too big for a 180.

Ive even seen motoros breed in a 180 and didnt a member here have three hens in a 180 with blue gravel that bred?

If you can keep the water clean and the tank open (no tank furniture) a male motoro pup at say 4-5" will last 2-3 years at least in most cases. Plenty enough time to upgrade.

Or check out the so called "red retics" they seem to be the smallest when it comes to size at maturation. Several cases have been preseneted with males at 5" with full claspers and females at no more then 6" given birth in importers tanks!
