Another Hypothetical for you all:

If you had a 200 gal tank - w/ a width of 30", what kind of catfish would you keep in there. (Preferably something that will not outgrow the tank), and will not be too small as to become P-Bass snacks. ;)

I would consider three species; Sorubium lima, Perrunichthys perruno and Learius pictus.

:iagree: , but you should also consider B. tigrinus (very expensive but SWEEEEET) and B. juruense.

My choices or the marbled pim as said above.

possibly a m. irwini if there are small fish you don't want the catfish to eat. Gets 24" but is a floor cleaner.

marbled pims get to big up to 3'. id recomend a lima or jurenese also.

I've got a beautiful Irwini, at least I THINK it's beautiful from the little bit of tail that pokes out of the wood once in a while. lol. That thing is even more secretive than raphael cats!

Thanks for the sugguestions. I looked into the recs you guys gave me. They are all awesome cats. Hehe. B. tigrinus is definately a beauty I would love to have. I know its rare. (How Expensive is Expensive?--> I take that will cost me an arm and leg?)

For some reason, I've always had an affinity for big catfishes. As for the B. juruense, are those hard to come by. Out of all the catfishes mentioned, I think i've only seen the lima commonly. I know the LFS around my parts have red tails and those red tail x TSN hybrids (which are too big). Any thoughts on a TSN? I have a feeling they get over 3' also... which will rule them out of my book, since the foot print of the tank is 6.5' x 2.5'.

I don't know how expensive Tigs are in your area, but here they go for $400-$600 in the 6"-9" range. Juruense are a fantastic alternative though "the poor man's tigrinus" lol, and they are not usually too hard to find.

sorry.. thought they got just a hair over 24", they won't work then.

jconley is right tig's are nice. and at lfs price are expensive but you can get smaller ones online for like 250.00+ shipping. I know still expensive. ;)

I vote jurenese you can find them on aquabid.com and just pay shipping. Might cost you $100.00 or so but cool cat to have.

Don't know what your calling a "Marbled Pim" in the States, but if it's P.perruno you are referring to I have never seen one over 26" in 30 years!
I think 30" wide would be fine. I had a small 14" Brachplatystoma tigrinum (updated from Merodontotus tigrinus last year), found it quite skittish and VERY inactive, even compared to all the other (relatively) large and inactive predatory catfish I have kept, and I have kept most of them. And it cost me the equivalent of $720.00 As for people recommending jurense, they are in the RTC size league, NOT suitable for you.
