I'd like to add some large Java ferns to the logs in my 250g. I've been told the Geos will tear plants up. I figured JAva fern would be the best bet. Anyone?
You could do well with java fern and anubias, because they seem to be distasteful to many fish, and they don't need to root into the substrate where the Geos dig.
I even keep anubias with vegetarians like Etroplus suratensus, although they devour just about any other plant.
Rooted plants with Geos is the problem. They always dig at the roots because that is where a lot of the mulm in your tank accumulats between cleanings. Anything tied to driftwood or stones should be fine....I never saw mine actually eat the plants.
If you do have any rooted in the substrate..place rocks around the base of the plant. This will discourage the geos from digging around it until it has a nice root structure.
I've had leucosticta and java fern on bog wood before with no problems. If its not sand/gravel, they don't bother it in my experience. I'll be putting java fern with steindachner later this year and I have no reservations about that whatsoever.
