Well, I picked up a single pumpkinseed sunfish at a local pond a week back. Put him in a cycled 30 gal, and he eats only earthworms.

What I want to know is, does anybody have any tips or warnings for keeping these guys? And how do I get him on pellets? He'll eat them but then sipt them out....guessing he doesn't like them, what pellets do you feed sunfish? Also, how often do i feed him? Once a day? Every other day? Twice a day?

him spitting out pellets is a start, what type are you feeding? try hikari cichlid gold all of my fish love it. stop feeding him worms and just pellets he will swollow them soon. ive had 3 or so pumpkin seed but they ended up on the dinner menu.

He's still too small for the bio-gold, and I've been trying to feed Hikari Micro pellets, but now I think I'll just try cutting a cichlid gold pellet in half, see if that works.

Ive never kept any native species but will in the future. Get snails, sunfish love em. Think of how they eat in the wild. Sometimes 3 times a day, or once every other day. He wont eat pellets, doesnt know they are food. Feed crickets, mealworms, wax worms, flies, ect... Whatever you see at this pond you caught him is what you should feed him. Get some small minnows, if hes like 5" then 1/2 inch minnows and under. There really only insect and snail eaters.

Try some sinking carnivore pellets. They don't have to fit in his mouth, if he likes them he'll nibble pieces off. I don't have many fish that won't eat those.

I have a Bluegill and he loves his Cichlid Sticks!!!!!

I mean , once he sees me walking out with the orange container with the cichlid sticks, he just flips out and follows me in the aquarium.

With most Sunfish it is not hard to get them to eat some sort of artificial food.

The only fish I have that refuses to eat artificial food is my LMB.

you've just got to be patient w/ them, i've got a dozen green sunfish that all chow down on flakes and pellets. when i first got them they only at live and frozen too but i kept offering flakes and pellets before feeding frozen/live and eventually they started eating both.

just remember when feeding stuff you find in the yard or outside your house that it could have poison or motor oil ect. one cricket that has poison on it and your fish is a goner.
