My rainbow cichlids started breeding and my Denison's barbs have culled quite a few of my fry and so I now want to move them out of my 40 breeder and into another tank. I have caught two of them but the third has eluded me and it's taken me now over an hour with no results. I have lowered the water level, used a towel to try and box him in but to no avail. Denison's Barbs are extremely sleek and very quick fish and I have never had a harder time catching a fish than right now Any tips you use would be helpful.

I lower the water and have two nets that span the width of the tank. They swim into the nets themselves.

Or make it night time now if you can black out the room the tank is in. Then in an hour or so sneak in and get them while sleeping. Mine sleep vertically against the back wall of the tank.

2 nets. One to guide him towards the other net.

That's how I caught my silver dollars in a 180 gallon

I finally caught the little bugger but it stressed him out, stressed out my rainbows, got me soaked and I wasted at least 90 minutes doing it. Yes, I'm definitely going to invest in a larger net.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

If I may also make a suggestion, get a larger net that also has wider holes in the netting itself. Small holes slow nets down through the water via drag.

Is this tank planted and you don't want to mess it up? If it's not, it should be a piece of cake. Like said, lower the water to fin level if you have to and use two large nets. You may catch more than you intended to, but it can be easier to catch the whole lot and toss back the ones to stay.

I'm in that situation with an old, heavily planted 55g. I've been trying to trap some baby BN plecs with a DIY water bottle trap to no avail. Best I can do is try to suck them out with my water change bailing pitcher.
