well i have 2 choices, 1. use my 100g glass in my bedroom with 2 hobs, or 2. setup my 100g acrylic in the bedroom with a sump. the 100 acrylic has a corner overflow with a 1" drain and i want to diy a w/d. any tips to make it quiet? how about a good quiet pump that will flow 500ish gph at 5' of head.

is it even possible to make quiet enough to sleep or should i just go with the hobs? i dont mind a constant hum but dont want to listen to niagra falls.

Believe it or not home made w/d are really, really quiet. The loudest part is my pump because it rumbles. :irked:

Im going to make one for my 180g soon and Im going to use a Quiet One pump. I hear they are quiet and reliable. No first hand experiance tho...

IME the overflow is what makes the noise, not the filter or the pump. If you situate the part of the overflow that goes into the sump under water, you won't hear it at all. When you have an enclosed stand, that pretty much takes all of the noise from the water flowing through the bioballs. Low flow rates help with noise as well.

You can make the overflow quiet, but it depends on what type you have.

Edit: I also use quiet one pumps and have had great luck with them. I have to constantly look to see if they're on because they're quiet.

like a durso standpipe? now its just a 4" box in the corner of the tank with a bulkhead at the bottom but im going to make a standpipe so the water only falls an inch or 2.

Perfect:)
If the durso starts to gurgle when you make it, drill the vent hole in the top a little bigger.

I insulated my under compartment in my bedroom tank with acoustic foam sheets, like they use in sound studios. I use a canister, but it is silent.
