I have just caught what i believe to be a case of hexamita with one of my cichlids. a little grammode.

symptoms: hasn't eaten for three days. sluggish with white stringy feces since that time.

read up on metronidazole, past threads, etc..

can anyone share some successful treatments used in the past. i'm especially curious about:
the temp used for treatment.
the number of times the tank was dosed.
if possible, the actual product used. do i really need to contact a vet for a decent drug?

i've got a 20g for treatment, and i'm leaning towards treating the water. not sure soaked food will be taken.

thanks for the help - i really don't want to lose this guy.

up to you, IMO three inches is plenty if you have a decent camera and a good angle. I will get back to you wit more info on Hex later tonight or tomorrow morning ok. I want to type it all right now but I have people waiting on me. Hopefully someone can answer your questions for now until I can sit down and crack open my brain and spill the goods. Right now, in the second I do have, it does sound like it may be an intestinal parasite like Hex, so read up on the treatments, and watch for any changes. I'll get back to you!

bump. anyone????

who am i lol

What makes you think you have hexamita in your tank?

But some pics would help

this is the cure for Hex but you might not have it. so i think pics would be a good idea;)

Hexamita is a very motile organism with six flagella. It is commonly found in pet stores especially in Discus, Angels, Cichlids, Goldfish and Oscars. It can also infect marine fish. It is sometimes call “The Discus Parasite” and can be a serious problem in stressed Discus and Angelfish. This organism infects the digestive tract and can go systematically to the liver and kidney. Normal signs of this disease is a decrease in vitality and eventual death.

Treatment The best treatment is with metronidazol 6ppm. (250mg. / 10gal.) per day, treat for 3 days (every day) and 50% water change daily. Can be put into tank, also you can treat in gel food at a 1% concentration. This medication is very safe and a very good in prevention.
