I have 6 ITs ranging from 6-9". Only two small ones will stabilize and swim around in the evening. The rest and most the time the two small ones stay dark and hide in the back. Could it be water parameters? I have them with red bay snooks which do not mess with them and stingrays. For the longest time I thought the stingrays stessed them out. The biggest ray in with them is 9" but the little ones come out and at feeding time they all come out but then go back to hiding. I have had 5 of the dats for over 2 years and the biggest one about 6 months. The nitrates stay around 40-60 ppm, could that be it, could it be lighting, I am not sure.

No trick, although one of my indo dats is constantly stable (one in my avatar). All my dats stable up during feeding time.

Beleive it or not but dats are stable when threathened/ showing off.

I happy chilled out dat is unstable and dark.

Most dats will never be fully stable.

From time to time they chase each other around but when they do this, they are solid black.

lol... :)

We've talked about this before. Yes, what u say is true, but the opposite can happen also
i.e.
Some tigers which are not being threatened (i.e. happy and chilled out, to use your words.....can also be stable with nice colours)

ITs are the worst for trying to get stable.

I think its down to :
-luck or 50/50
-time (longer you keep a community together, more chance of some turning stable)
-dim lighting definately helps (but not guaranteed)
-Sometimes semi aggressive tankmates (but not guaranteed)

In a community of IT (say 10), rarely will everysingle one be stable...all the time. Usually, 2 or 3 will be stable and the rest rotate , going through periods of time for being stable and unstable. This is what I have noticed in my experience over 5 -6 yrs.

ST is a totally different fish re: being stable.

Good info but not very encouraging LOL!

I have raised many dime sized IT's and how they are 3-4" and they seem to take turns turning stable especially when I am feeding. I had one that was stable 90% of the time but now realize that was just his time to look pretty.

They all take turns in my tank at least. Food seems to be the answer for my tigers. Like when I feed fresh market shrimp one piece at a time, The Tiger that gets the shrimp turns stable while food is in his mouth and runs as others are trying to rob him of his meal.

Then I drop another piece and it starts all over. The stable ones usually stay stable long enough so I can film them:D.

Whats your current decor? That also effects their stabilization. I've had setups where I had a few dats that were not stable actually stable up simply from changing the aquascape (e.g. driftwood, plants, as well as substrate). There are tons of variables that contribute to whether a dat is stable or not. A couple years ago, I bought a dat from the LFS that was black in their tank and completely stable in mines. That same dat went through a phase (based on a change in aquascape) where he was not stable. He is one of very few dats that I have not sold off and is currently stable again. He's been in three different tanks and dozens of changes in aquascaping. Try switching it up from time to time until you get the results you're looking for. They CAN stable up!

i added small silver dollars and now my small dats doesnt hide and shows stable colors 90% of the time

Yep, adding silver dollars helps them come out of hiding and helps with the colors IME. You need a good school of silver dollars though, at least 6 of them.
