a florida soft shell might work would be better to get a female if possible or a mata mata or other side-neck species
Any turtle out there that will stay small and live with fish?

I not sure about the softshell turtle as they can get very aggressive and nippy even at a redtail cat fish. I think your best best would be go to a local park and try and catch one of the larger red ear sliders turtles, they can get a nice sizes and live with catfish already. Other than that, a FRT is the best way to go, and maybe if you look around you might be able to get a larger one for less money. It's was the smaller FRT 3-7 size range commanding a larger coin.
I see you are in Florida, and actually the last place I seen FRT for sale was in Florida...
I wouldn't put a frt anywhere near a rtc. I've heard of rtc's eating turtles before. That is one expensive meal if that happens.
I am not sure that a 5in RTC would be much threat to a FRT larger than he is, and even though RTC grow pretty rapid, with the proper feeding the FRT can grow pretty fast. Lastly if he get the RTC off live food and on pellets of some sort while he is small he will fair out much better with any of his fish being eating by the RTC..
I've seen RTC TRY to eat things way too big for them to swallow... basically enough to kill them.
Honestly, you are thinking about putting a living creature in harms way of another living creature.. I love catfish, and I love turtles.. and I would not ever think about adding those 2 together.
My friend had a 5" RTC try to eat a 12"+ black arowana not even 2 hours of having the arowana.. he couldn't eat it.. instead, it just ended up killing it.
I had a RTxTSN at about 18" who NEVER bothered any fish ever... lived in harmony with other fish, and little 4" bichirs.. then one day my 6" bichir was gone..
