I've been in love with these fish for years, never bought one because of all the descriptions of them being a hyper aggressive cichlid. But I feel like I'm gonna burst if I don't break down and get one so I'm turning to the members of MFK for help. How true is it about there aggression? I know towards conspecifics it's probably high. Can I get away with mixing them in with Indo Dat's a Silver Aro and a vulture cat. Please tell me about your personal experiences with these guys in a community. Thanx in advance.

Mine was ok when smaller (up to 8" or so) in an overstocked 220. Larger (10") in an understocked 360 it liked to pick out one fish and chase it constantly. Currently I have him (12") in a 6' 100 gallon with an 8" female and they have to be divided because he'll kill her.

So, when smaller they're fine in anything. Once they hit 8" or so they get more aggressive. These fish aren't aggressive to all fish, they select one and then harass it to death and then move on. I've not kept mine with non-cichlids so I don't know how they'd fare. In a large enough tank (220+) they might be ok.

I've had them at up to 5" and Modest man is right on with his assessment. When at the size I had them at I kept them with most other CA cichlids that were moderately aggro. I've never had one past that size. Aren't Dats pretty mellow? I'd say you'd be ok if the dats are bigger than the Argentea but I dont typically mix cichlids with non-cichlids. The aro should be fine though. Most cichlids tend to leave them alone if they're of a decent size. What size are your dats and your tank?

i love these fish. and its correct. . .they do get nasty with each other when they mature. mine are sterting to get aggressive with their own group
