Hey all! The title says it all. Is there anyway to speed up the nitrItes turning into nitrAtes? I read all the stickys and have searched the web. I was able to almost totaly skip the amonia stage by using water, filter media, plants and decorations from other tanks but I can't find any tricks that say how to speed up the nirites turning into nitrates. I know that a second type of bacteria colony is needed but how do I get it to develop quicker or are there no tricks. I figure that if there is a way, it is you all that would know it. Thanks for any thought or info!

2 kinds of bb.

Bb that turns ammonia into nitrite

Bb that turns nitrite into nitrate

As long as you have a food/ammonia source they will develope. I used old media from my other tank and it was complete in a week.

Are there fish in it? What kind? Tank size?

All u can do it test ur water to see if its ready, smaller fish can be placed in a non cycled tank if its not cramped but bigger fish are harder to do because of nitrate/ammonia spikes. Just keep an eye on it and u can buy seachem stability which helps promote bacteria colonies!

Sorry to keep posting on my own post but I keep remembering stuff I should mention. It is only a 33 gallon and I have been keeping the temp up around 85/86ish. There......I think that is it. Ha ha!

Thanks F1 Vet. I've been adding a bit of fish waste from other filters to supply the food source. I just want it done so I can add fish ASAP. If there is a fastest way.....I want to know it.

change a old filter insert on ur other tank and put it in that filter somewhere so all the water touches it, also, buy ceramic filter media at ur local fishstore, aquaclear110 ceramic bio is good as well as Fluval ceramic bio max, put that in your filter ontop of filter pad and the BB will have somewhere to house itself. Ceramic has millions of pours so it can hold alot of BB. It would also be a good idea to put old substrate (gravel) from ur old tank to new and add maybe 1-2 fish, in a week add another couple and youll be good, just do a 40% water change in a week and after that do 30% per week thereafter. If your nitrates go to high then itll kill ur fish (60 and up ppm)

Nitrates-5-30 ppm ideal
Nitrites-0
Ammonia-0

Thanks. Already got all the media but unfortunately don't have any second hand gravel to use. I know it is one of the best way to add seeded material to you tank. I've been keeping the light on for about 8 hours a day because of plants of plants. Is this slowing my tank down?
