Just recently got a gar last Friday and his nose is pretty beat up...

First of all, the tank parameters are perfect...0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, 5 nitrates.

Hes been swimming up and down the tank since ive got him...I noticed that it is quite common in first unestablished gars, although for how long more should I expect him to stop??

FYI: every once in a while, I seen him twitch... not sure if its a common gar behavior.

Also, hes eating ALOT...My LFS gave some swordtails/platies as a freebie to feed him and he ate ALL of them. I am however, trying to wean him on frozen.

my guess would be that the fish is stressed. what is the tank size and mates? also what is the size of the fish? try adding some plants, decor or cover for the time being to calm it down for now, also try not to switch the lights on the tank on too quickly.(switch on the lights in the room or wait for sun up first)

Every once in a while my florida does this. Maybe once a week for about an hour or so. He seems to get transfixed with the reflection or something.

Always gets bored eventually. Since your fish is new I think it's just stress and confusion. It should stop soon if the tank is large enough. If the tank is too small then it may pose a problem for the nose and spine.
