Hello all. Does anybody know a place on Long Island that accepts fish donations? I’ve had my blood parrot for 7 years and I want to give her to a good home. She’s about 6” I also have a beautiful 6” gold Severum., And a small 3” blood parrot. I’m sad to say but I’m getting out of fish hobby for a while. The other day I came downstairs to my beautiful 9”Indonesian datnoid dead. Everything looked fine and I was shocked being he just ate the night before. All my other fish were very still. I noticed my thermometer glass was shattered. Right away I thought mercury poison and reached in to do a water change. That’s when I realized the tank was super cold. Gotta love this stupid NY weather where it’s supposed to be warm this time of the year, but the last few weeks the nights dipped down into the 40s. The heater failed and caused the tank to drop into the 50s. The sudden drop possibly broke the glass thermometer? I’m not sure exactly but needless to say the heater was an eheim jager which I swore was the best heater up until this moment. The light on the heater was lit saying it was functioning but no heat was coming off of it. It was also not very old at all. Only a few months if that. The last one I replaced a few months ago because it had condensation inside it. That being said I am just completely devastated and need to step away from the hobby for a while. I have had the datnoid for 6 years since he was the size of a quarter. He was my favorite fish. I have had my blood parrot for over 7 years as well and I just want her and the remaining fish to go to a good home. If anybody knows a place who takes donations, or wants them for themselves please feel free to let me know. I would feel much better knowing I gave them away to a fellow fish keeper rather than a LFS.

^^Agree with above.

Also aquarium thermometers do not contain mercury so don't worry about that issue.

Sorry for your loss.
