I've got 2 JDs, a male and a female pair, their only other tank mate is a RTC I am trying to get rid of. The catfish loves to hid all day(obviously) inside this pirate ship decoration I have. However my dempseys also want it(surprisingly because I built them a cave thing with a flat rock as a bottom). My RTC is has almost an inch on my cichlids and my bad ass male grabs on to his face and drags him out of the cave like its nothing. I know this isn't normal because JDs tend to be a more passive cichlid. I am proud to own to mega aggressive Jds. I can't wait until the spawn (they're a new pair and haven't done the dirty yet) so I can see how much meaner they get.

The name Jack Dempsey was given in honor of a prize fighter in the early 20th century, so passivity is not really accurate, although in later years tougher, and seemingly more aggressive cichlids have been brought into the hobby.
In nature JDs share their habitat with similar size catfish, which give them some space, but the catfish feed on JD fry that wander too far from the nest, so there is no love lost (to be overly anthropomorphic).
Below are pics I took in cenotes in Mexico.
