Anybody Have A Piraiba?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry, not much help. I've never had one. I don't think they are any more ridiculous to keep than any other freshwater champion giants like Paroon sharks, Arapaimas, Wels, Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii (Dourada), Sturgeon, etc. You are right, only very, very few people can keep these as adults in humane conditions. Anyhow, I'd be interested to hear from the Piraiba keepers too and see their pics.

ECZS (East Coast Zoological Supply; John) sold hundreds of them within 1-2 recent years (~$70; he advertises on H2O-w..ves). There must be tons of juvis and sub-adults around.

I think that's actually a b. Capapretum at that size their spots should have faded by now and should b a solid silver/metalic color also the head shape is a little off still a nice looking cat tho!

Nice. How long did it take to grow from 3" to 13"?

This fish appears to have a damaged/disfigured mouth shape/upper jaw. Filamentosum has a significantly longer upper jaw vs lower jaw compared to capapretum, it appears to my untrained eye. See the last pic in this datasheet - direct comparison of the two fish mentioned: http://www.planetcatfish.com/catelog/image.php?species=brachyplatystoma+filamentosum&image_id=10666

I am not sure if I'd necessarily agree with the spot loss info above but these are just opinions.
