ALthough i don t have a flounder my grandmother used to have 2, they both withered away and died... they were onbly an inhc long... i saw some at my LFS the other day and they were almost 4" long, i wish i bought one, they had cool designs too... THe mysterious FW flounder is a tricky fish to keep,

In general. the FW flounder that is most often found in fish shops in the US is the hogchoker, Trinectes maculatus. THis is actually a type of sole rather than a flounder. Though these are found in pure frshwater, sometimes hundreds of miles inland, they are still a brackish water fish and would do much better with the addition of some marine salt. WHen small, they will eat live black worms, and then possibly frozen blood worms. THey need something meaty that will sink to the bottom. As they get larger, they become more piscivorous in nature and would prefer small fish or earthworms. These guys get about 6-8 inches long and really should be kept in a species only tank if possible since they generally aren't very aggressive feeders. They should also be kept in a tank with a sand substrate. They prefer to spend the majority of their time partially buried in the sand with just their eyes above. These are very interesting fish to keep, but they are certainly not for beginners, nor are they particularly easy.

Planning on having a few hog chokers when I setup my BIG tank to emulate the local springs. They are available from sachs and jonahs...

ahh, so thats why mine died. when it died it looked perfectly fine, just didnt move for three days, then i netted it and it was stiff as a board. loved frozen brine shrimp and black worms though. only about 1.5"

hogchokers (there are actually at least 3 species that is in the aquarium trade, 2 from USA and 1 from Peru or Brazil) are NOT for beginners.

They need a FINE sand substrate (no sharp sand!) to burrow into to "stalk" prey. They also camoflauge so brightly colored or funny colored gravel will stress them out because they can't "adapt" to the substrate.

I have kept them before and they have grown quite a bit. They are less common in the hobby now because before, mostly chain stores like petsmart and petco carried them, but they didn't sell very well because they get them small so they don't carry them anymore (either it is that or segrest farms stopped catching them. PETCO uses segrest farms as a wholesaler)

They are local for me. 10 min drive and a few min with either a net or a slurp gun...

they are local for me too. I can get them in the local salt marsh. But they don't live even if I put them into a brackish tank

Mine lived until my puffer beat up one and my crab ate the other one. They got shrimp pellets, SFBB brine shrimp, and SFBB blood worms.

Saw some of those in Indiana, they are cool.
