In my personal experience, the magnetic scrapers don’t work as good as they might say. The ones that’s look like a sponge on a stick are a bit difficult because you can’t really see all the diatoms when looking down from above and that leads to scraping too much of the wall in one spot that ma possibly disturb the substrate and cause waste to be free floating. I use a magnetic scraper and sometimes the stick one but prefer the magnetic because you can see better where you’re scraping and if there’s and algae in that spot but the downside is that it takes a bit longer to remove the algae from that spot. They both are good choices but both have their pros and cons like any other product. In my 40g I also have a UV sterilization light that works absolute wonders.

So I pulled the trigger on a hog2. im putting it in a 30g with convicts and tetra it says it can offset the nitrates released from 2 cubes of food, I feed about 1 cube so very interested to see how it works. I will post how it goes. They say it will keep nitrates at zero. I am extreemly skeptical.

I feel that thinking in terms of how much nitrate is in a cube or in a certain amount of food vs what kind of filter (type, size, frequency of maintenance, or whatever) is all the incorrect approach. Nitrate accumulation is a result of ammonia and nitrite breakdown, which are only somewhat loosely dependent (quantitatively) on feeding. Even if the fish were purposefully starved, they will still produce ammonia, and hence will result in nitrate in the tank. So why to take this approach?

Food in and waste out. Direct corrleation regardless of tank size or water valume. When you take a dump its directly related to what you have eaten not the size of you house or toilet.

Incorrect again. Ammonia production is only partly dependent on food amount, or type. The correlation you describe is far from direct. This is independent of whether an algae scrubber is a useful tool.

Interesting, so if I have an empty tank I will get ammonia nitrie and nitrate?
