Hi
Anyone breed darters in a tank set up?

My male brown darters have been trying to mate with the females (hovering over them, shaking) but from what I read they simply wont breed in a tank ?

Thanks

I haven't but I've seen it done in pretty big tanks. They breed some species of darters at the freshwater mussel research lab at the Columbus Zoo. The tanks they did it in looked to be in the 150-180 gallon range.

Thanks I suspected if done at all it would require a big long tank. . The males have been mounting the females and "courtship dance" shaking over them but imagine nothing will come of it.

Here is a pic of them mating . The male mounts the female in the plants and for second they shake/swim belly touching . Bright red fin dots

However like you said big tank is the key . This is only a 30 gallon long (36 inch) with 2 male darters and 4 females thus to small for any egg laying.
