I have sadly went thru around 6-8 scombs just trying to get 2 to live. I have been keeping aquariums for 15+ years and i have never had any problem like this before. I think that the first 2 were my fault cause the tank was not fully cycled and the ammonia got up to 1-2ppm before i caught it. The second 2 looked pretty bad when i got them. The lfs said might not get anymore so i took a chance. And they lasted for 3-4 weeks and i could not get the tail rot to go away. And so on and so on. So now i am down to the last one, lucky number 8 or so i hope. My tank is a 55 planted with a 6'' hujeta and a 7'' bichir and the scomb. I have at the most .25ppm ammonia and allmost no nitrite and around 20ppm nitrate (my tap water has 10+). I do weekly 50% WC's and my temp is 80 degrees. I have had this last scomb for 2 weeks and I have not seen him eat yet but i think that he has to be eating. I think i am going to put him in the feeder tank for a few days and count feeders. Has anyone on this site successfully kept a scomb for say 1 year or more. I have been upto 4 months on my last set which was the longest they were pigs eating 8-10 guppies a day at only 4''. The one i have now is at 6''. Anyone have any ideas.

sadly,
they are very weak fish.
thats one of the things i dont like about scombs.
i had a few for a few mths then all of the sudden they die.

yeah scombs are also known to mysteriously die off at 12" awell..... thats if your lucky enough to get them to live that long

massive filtration, dont over feed and try to get them on dead/frozen food asap

I had my 2 for a little over a year. Krill and shrimp was thier main food. They are VERY easily stressed by tank mates. Bigger tanks are also better not so much for the space aspect but for water quality stability. I kept mine at 85 degrees and salt with every waterchange. Grew them from a little under 2 inches to about 7 when they both died for no apparent reason. I actually kept my 1st one in light brackish water. Did great, grew to about 8 inches before being gutted by a moray.

a fresh water moray killed your scomb?
mad as **** lol
i didnt think those little guys were like that. i know they are predatory but not like that, i thouht they just attacked small fish and inverts

hmmm... how do you think one would get on with my channa pleuro?
