I have a 4 inch common that loves to swim up to the surface and grab hikari cichlid pellets. I drop two algae wafers in at every feeding, but he still seems to prefer the pellets. Does anyone else's do this?

yeah my commons do this too plecos eat just about anything

Yup, they are omnivores and will eat just about anything that doesn't swim away.

The Common species should be fed mostly on vege based foods for their long term health, but a bit of higher protien food is good for them.

I drop some sinking catfish 'shrimp' pellets in for mine along with the algae tablets and veges. They even get a whole shrimp as a special treat sometimes.

it smells the meat in the pellets
no meat in algae wafers

i've seen plecos in our LFS doing this floating upside down thing when being fed floating pellets

all my plecos love pellets... if they are lucky enough to get them...usually the pellets don't make it to the bottom... thats when i use the thongs to help.. they prefer the pellets to any thing..
