I'm planning on going to one this Sunday, I've only been to one and wasn't there very long. I hope they have some nice fish I would be interested in, but I've yet to see that at an auction. Has anyone here picked up/seen a decently rare or large fish at one? If so please share your experiences!

My fish club has an auction every month and a larger mega-auction twice a year. I got my Black shark from one of these auctions for $1.

you never know what is for sale until know until you go

Arrive early to view the fish for sale. check them carefully so you can avoid damaged, sick, or over packed fish
Be patient and only bid on what you really want.
Don't bid just to raise the price, you may end up winning an auction you didn't intend to and only the seller will appreciate it.
don't buy just because it is a good deal. (unless you have a whole fish room to fill and your theme is random good deals)
If it is rare, you are also bidding against the likelihood of ever seeing that fish for sale a gain... bid accordingly, but don't go crazy.
if you go crazy and overbid, be prepared to pay up with no regrets and just enjoy the fish!

no matter what have fun, make some friends, and talk aquariums... maybe even take home some new fish!

Great advice, thanks man! Ill probably make a big list of possible fish I want and if I see it, ill pick it up. I'm looking for driftwood and plants too.

I've been going to fish auctions every year since the mid 80s.
My local aquarium club has a mini auction at every meeting (1 per month) and 2 giants auctions every year, 1 in spring, 1 in fall.
I also go to the gcca cichlid auctions in Chicago, and whenever the ACA is within driving distance to their national convention and auction.
Most of my fish come from the above, or trading with other members.
