ok so i came across this product called Weco Wonder Shell. it is surpose to maintain your PH like a PH buffer and also add calcium to help your fish grow?

i actually need a PH buffer like this because i dont wanna add any crushed coral as it would look out of place in my tank. but i was woundering if anyone has ever heard of this or have used it. i want to put a pretty big piece of drift wood inside of my 10gal tank and i am almost sure it will drop my PH to a pretty good deal so i was woundering if i have enuff buffer in my tank would it stop the PH from dropping too much? i think KH means how much of a buffer you have in your water right?

any feed back would be great.
this is the site about the wounder shell

P.S. also how come so many PH buffer products like to say "great for african cichlids"? I mean if i had say tetras wont they PH buffers as much as cichlids?

when it talks about africans, that means it is trying to emulate the pH found in most of their native homes. Do your fish a favor, stop chasing an ideal pH, and your fish will thank you for having a stable, stress free envrionment.

Is there a way to put the coral in the filter??

It also seems that stable ph is better for your fish overall. When we do research on our fish we read what ph is found in its natural environment. It is a noble thought to try to emulate this number. Unfortunately we sometimes forget that a fish tank is not a natural environment. We sometimes do more harm going up and down trying to find perfect rather that keeping it stable. The fish will thrive in a stable environment.

well thing is i have in the past put this big drift wood inside my little 10 gal before and caused a PH crash, the PH was well below 5.0 which killed my fishes. the drift wood is an amzing piece and pretty much MAKES the tank. so i was woundering if i had "wondershells" in my tank it could maybe cancel out the drfitwood and its PH lowering ability?

use a layer of crushed coral UNDER your favorite substrait. You get the advantages of buffering AND the look you want. Thats what my wife and I do on all of our tanks and it works out great. One problem your also going to have is that it's almost impossible to keep 10 gallons of water as stable as a couple of hundred...

i was actually thinking of putting it under my gravel too but then thought it would mess up when i do my water changes and stir up the gravel, also there is no room in my AC 50

I know this thread is kinda old but has anyone had success using this product since? I know a lot people use coral/shells/aragonite but i do not want to raise my PH (it's fine at 7.4 from my tap) and i hear/read that corals/shells may not buffer fast enough.

According to this link:

http://www.americanaquariumproducts.com/MedicatedWonderShell.html

"Please note that Wonder Shells do NOT generally raise KH or pH, they more aid in maintenance of these parameters by neutralizing harmful acids that result from organic decomposition"

lol just was browsing through and saw my thread from a 2 years ago bumped. From what i can remember this product worked BUT you have to put in a new one after it completely dissolved and you do a water change. With my 10 gal one shell only lasted me maybe alittle less then a week and after the water change i gotta put in a new one.

EDIT: i use the large shells
