I take the buss to the Steinhart Aaquarium frequently just to look at the cuttlefish. They have always facinated me. Their extreme intelligence and their visual method of communication. I have been thinking about branching out from goldfish and this is the first aquarium inhabitant I think of. Has anyone made a go at keeping them in captivity? What size tank? What food items? Did you develop a relationship with your cuttlefish? I read on average they live two years. Just like a Pacific Giant Octopus. Such a sad length of life for such an intelligent creature. If anyone has any personal experience in keeping a cuttlefish please feel free to get in touch with me at glenndalton707@yahoo.com

Cuttlefish are very cool, I never kept them other than in a can in the cabinet, good eating. They have always fascinated me for their place in the evolution of squid type creatures.

See if you can talk to someone at the aquarium. Particularly the ones who takes care of the cuttlefish exhibit

A few of us on the site have kept cuttlefish before. There even used to be a vendor called Octipets that sold a few different species. They've, unfortunately, closed down several years ago.
The most common species kept was Sepia bandensis; the dwarf cuttlefish. There are tons of care sheets on the web and vids on Youtube. I miss my 'smart clams' but, just don't have the proper time to give them anymore.
BTW, if you plan on keep cuttlefish long-term, you need to find a species that readily reproduces in captivity. These all have a life expectancy of only a couple of years. Add to that the fact that whatever cuttlefish you buy may have already lived out 1/2 its life, it's imperitive to breed them to be able to enjoy them for any length of time.
