this fish caught my eye while browsing online but i cant seem to find much info on them. anyone keep them or have any info? pics?
thanx

We have one at work. It's under two feet and it's in a 2000 gallon display tank. It is one of the least outgoing fish in the tank and is usually the last to get any food.

I have read that they have a tendency to rip open same sized/color fish's guts. They don't eat the organs, they just disembowel them. On fishbase they say that they may only live like 5 years. Also, they are bubblenesters

lol sounds pretty crazy. im just looking for a fish that can survive my tank and stays somewhat active. are they aggresive or do they get pushed around? how active are they?

Being a characin I would imagine they are somewhat skittish in a smaller tank. This guy isn't skittish, but during feeding time he clears the way for the PBass, RTCs and Arowanas.

This guy isn't aggressive, but like I said, there are many horror stories of them disemboweling silver characin-like fish.

90% percent of the time he will just be swimming in place. Then he will usually move directly to the next spot he plans on doing that.

One more thing is, this one is pretty chubby and I have seen a lot of pictures of abnormally fat odoes. I believe Norbert has one, you can probably try asking him about his.

From my experience with other people I know (haven't kept them myself) they are a schooling fish so that might explain some shyness in other tanks when they are alone. they don't live long but they grow EXTREMELY fast and IME (again in a group of 3) they are decently aggressive eaters and pretty fast.

all from what i have seen, I have not personally kept them

I have on that is just over a year old. He started out at about 4 inches and is now 9-10 inches. I feed him thawed sliversides. He is in a 65 gal (4' long by 1.5' wide) tank by himself. I have an area of hang plastic plants that form a cove where he tends to hang out, but the rest of the tank is open. He does not swim back and forth all day but periodically moves. When I go to the tank, he always will look towards me anticipating food. Sometimes he will hit the silversides as they fall; other times he checks them out and comes back a little later to eat them. To me, he has one of the slickest shapes combined with a silver color.

They must be jumpers, there was a kid on here that had 3 of them in a 75g tank. I believe they ended up dry on the floor.

The stories of disembowlment are not common at all unless you call 2 common if they were common no one would keep odoe with ATFs yet plenty do...Also I wouldn't say they are schooling like tetras or barbs but more like a Pacu sense where they'll school and pair but as they age they may seperate....Also I'd say a minimum tank would be 72x18x18 larger if you want more
